This little engine, so full of
steam and spirit, rolls on.
Rolls on, and we are caught,
held shackled to
the driving wheel.
Rolls on wheels of thunder,
on tracks of bone,
sinew and sweat.
This little engine, so wild, so willing,
hungry for the hill.
Beyond cares for
safety of steel,
this vital spark,
this flame so pure,
rolls at speeds too great
for us to see.
This little engine, born from
sweetest dreams, rolls on.
Beyond breath,
beyond and
before word,
pulls the breeze across my face,
leaves us reeling
at the gate...
Rolls on, rolls on, rolls on...

Well it’s not year by year,
And certainly not day by day,
That the focus need be on,
It’s moment by moment!.
Most of us, walk through our days,
A burning oilrig of chaos,
So fragile…
Battlefield, board-room, bedroom,
Surgery waiting room at 4:15
Now the trick here,
Is just to walk through,
Like you’re in a fire-suit
You may come out charred,
Or just a little hot under the collar
Sorrow enough to fill an ocean,
Joy enough to fill the skies!

There’s eye-popping going on
When mermaids, midgets, pachyderms parade
Through the gaping American mind.
The Escape Artist waits
Until tickets are sold.
Then chains fall limp,
Handcuffs clatter into cash.
Clowns mug through wanton crowds
So line up on benches,
Let the canvas unfurl!
PT stands aside, laughing.
Father of the fabulous humbug,
PT Barnum- Phineas Taylor- is the
Moneymaking mogul when mummy’s the word.
Delusions, impositions, quackeries, deceits:
Behold the Swedish nightingale.
Make way for the walnut carriage and
Tom Thumb’s miniature breath.
This Temple of Fortune amazes, delights,
Picks pockets with exotic purchase.
The friendly hokum is deliberate art
Connected at Siamese waist.
Leave troubles outside the flap.
Elect PT for mayor of marvel.
He is the golden eagle flying.
Lying under cool marble,
Inviting all with coin
To join the great show
Where ball and chain
Disappears.

My ghosts are close tonight, hovering, darting,
Mambo dancing, playing with my food.
Pratt-falling for attention, giving advice that is out of date.
Reminding me to see as deeply as I breathe.
My ghosts are very close
My ghosts don’t scare me!
Dressed in their finest ghostly attire, well some
Wear bells on conical hats, others they wear Zoot suits.
My ghosts pretend to know what to say in public,
Have memories of etiquette, yet still say all the wrong things.
My ghosts call me at odd hours, shrieking, barking,
Waking me to run to the store for fruit
That is out of season.
They have other versus that they would have me speak for them
(Like oooooooooooooaaaaaaeeeeeeee).
My ghosts have an open party line to each other
They have spirited discussions about the errors of my choices
They are not camera shy, have no stage fright,
And only a few issues each…all different from each other!
My ghosts are very close
My ghosts don’t scare me!
BOO!

Fine stone, golden vision,
Beacon of a larger mind
Gather day into night,
Dark into light in a
Motion constant and pure.
Gather the message of the stars,
Receive the frequency of
The music of the spheres, and
Allow it to race
Through your arches and space.
But also be a hallowed place
Where thirst turns to strength,
Question turns to peace.
Be water and food,
A station of rescue
In the terrible wild.
And gather those on the ground,
Become a single eye,
A giant ear, a mouth
That speaks without a sound.
Fine vision, golden stone,
Both give and receive.
Be a satellite,
A rod ready for the surge
Of power dropping from the sky.
Then give it to the needy,
The broken hearts who need to mend,
Stout ones who never bend, and
Allow it to race
Across their upturned face.

The Ballad of Johnny Paintbrush
|
|
|
|
I was nothing but a stranger in town
Until I met a man with a steady hand
He said I’m Johnny and with a wink of the eye
He told me about how he had changed the land
When he came out from California
There wasn’t anywhere the kids here could play
So Johnny built some ball fields and playgrounds
And now the children can play all day
Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He’s working all the time
Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He built a park out of sweat and dimes
But it was slow to start, people didn’t come quick
Because it was so hot and sunny
So Johnny built the shelters and created shade
And it didn’t really cost much money
The park needed bridges and paths
And a place for the arrows to shoot
There was a whole lot of work to do
So Johnny just dug in his boots
Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He’s working all the time
Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He built a park out of sweat and dimes
Johnny planted the orange and purple flowers
He planted a sign in the stone
He took a barn and made it straight
He plays music there and never alone
People donate to Johnny’s cause
Because they see what he has done
He’s taken a place full of scrub brush
And made the Paintbrush fountains run
Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He’s working all the time
Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He built a park out of sweat and dimes
Johnny helps save history
The old tools give a sense of time
But more he gives the people a place to gather
And leave their troubles behind
I was once a stranger in town
Until I took a ride in Johnny’s car
He showed me that a man doesn’t have to retire
When his spirit is hitched to a star
Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He’s working all the time
Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He built a park out of sweat and dimes
