  The Boa Constrictor!!

by Tim Van Schmidt

I don’t know about you , but I know about me
And I don’t mind saying it’s getting a little tight in here
I mean I’m getting tired of thinking that there’s really no such thing as black and white in here.

I try to do everything that the world asks of me
The tasks, no basking in the sun, but it wants more
No matter how many checks I write, it frightens me to the core

The Boa Constrictor
Is burning out my transistors
If I have to pay the bills without any kind of thrill then I…….can’t keep cool

Now I sold my house and made a little bit of cash
But you can bet on it Bro, it was gone before I knew
That you don’t own money, it’s just passing through….someone else’s bank account

It’s really kind of funny…ha, ha…how it works out
That no matter what you’re making, it’s just not enough
It doesn’t matter if you’re a big, bad tough…if you just don’t have the amount

The Boa Constrictor
Is a mighty bad persister
Even when I have the will, I still think I need some pills because it’s hard…….to keep cool

…..squeezing…..treason…..freezing…..sleazing…..that’s the reason…..for the season….of the Boa Constrictor!!

There’s a hungry lion lying out in the grass and his stomach is empty for you
There’s a vulture named George who wants a little bit too
Who doesn’t want what I haven’t got??

I’d try to bring my two ends together, that is if I could reach that far
I’ve got long arms but I need another foot
To step over this feeling that everything is just out of reach

The Boa Constrictor is a pretty ugly sister
We’re connected at the hip, so don’t give it any lip and try…….to keep cool

  The Ballad of Johnny Paintbrush

by Tim Van Schmidt

I was nothing but a stranger in town
Until I met a man with a steady hand
He said I’m Johnny and with a wink of the eye
He told me about how he had changed the land

When he came out from California
There wasn’t anywhere the kids here could play
So Johnny built some ball fields and playgrounds
And now the children can play all day

Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He’s working all the time

Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He built a park out of sweat and dimes

But it was slow to start, people didn’t come quick
Because it was so hot and sunny
So Johnny built the shelters and created shade
And it didn’t really cost much money

The park needed bridges and paths
And a place for the arrows to shoot
There was a whole lot of work to do
So Johnny just dug in his boots

Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He’s working all the time

Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He built a park out of sweat and dimes

Johnny planted the orange and purple flowers
He planted a sign in the stone
He took a barn and made it straight
He plays music there and never alone

People donate to Johnny’s cause
Because they see what he has done
He’s taken a place full of scrub brush
And made the Paintbrush fountains run

Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He’s working all the time

Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He built a park out of sweat and dimes

Johnny helps save history
The old tools give a sense of time
But more he gives the people a place to gather
And leave their troubles behind

I was once a stranger in town
Until I took a ride in Johnny’s car
He showed me that a man doesn’t have to retire
When his spirit is hitched to a star

Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He’s working all the time

Oh Johnny
Johnny Paintbrush
He built a park out of sweat and dimes

  On a Moment's Notice!! Loveland!!

Lively Building

Bubbles are bursting like innocence,
squirrels are cracking nuts in spirals,
a frozen waterfall towers over the "wongah" moonbeams.
While treading on dry leaves, the woodpecker speaks to the trees.

In Nepal, monks pray over singing bowls,
purple halos glowing like a still life.
In Loveland, someone's thinking
of company at Grandma's house;
standing in rainbow sunlight,
ringing like a church bell
and shaking like a rattlesnake.

  Freedom Day (for Timothy Masters)

by Tim Van Schmidt

Green and white balloons are rising
Into the deep winter sky,
The bitter freeze turned back
By the strength of the sun.
On a day wide with triumph,
Freedom is now stepping through the door.

Green and white balloons are rising
One man released from tough walls
Built by rabid insistence.
One woman’s soul now closer to truth;
Her question may finally be answered.
Freedom lifts them both into the frigid open air.

Green and white balloons are rising
They are a message to the world:
Lies must not stand,
Failures must be corrected- now.
This is not about just one woman and man.
Freedom, this day, is more precious for all.

  Tim Van Schmidt's "Sunshine Songs"!!

New downloads celebrate album re-release
Tim Van Schmidt Re-Releases a Colorado Rarity Online

In 1996, Fort Collins song writer and music journalist Tim Van Schmidt set to work recording a full album of original music with some of the musician friends he met along the way in his home town. The result was titled "Sunshine Songs," 18 tracks of wide-ranging styles of music and the help of more than 30 Northern Colorado musicians. The guest list in the studio included many of the musicians who were at the top of the heap at the time- like John Magnie and Steve Amedee of the subdudes, Liz Barnez, Dave Beegle, Mark Sloniker and many more. Some 13 years later, most of those guest artists- and Schmidt- are still plenty active.

Schmidt's album was well received at the time partially because besides creating challenging music, the clarity and crispness of the recordings by co-producer Russ Hopkins were state of the art. So much so that Schmidt decided that the music still holds up well to contemporary sound standards and should be given a new life in a new way. That's why Schmidt has re released the entirety of "Sunshine Songs" on his web site, www.timvanschmidt.com. All 18 tracks are now available online as free downloads. The original liner notes are also included on the webpage, listing all of the contributors including Scott Allen, Kevin Jones, Rob Solomon, Gregory Long, Jerry Palmer and more. Please enjoy listening to our music and support local music wherever you are!!

  Ice on Titan?

by Tim Van Schmidt

The thin fingers tell the story
of alien geography.
Somehow, something moves
towards a reservoir of itself,
unknown, unrelenting,
cutting canyons through crust.
Closer, the probe moves closer.

What are those marbles,
rock or ice? static
icebergs of ancient steam?
So far from the sun,
spinning rings overhead,
this moon speaks a familiar tongue.
Closer, we must get closer.
